"I have a bone to pick with Ron"
As if there wasn't already enough controversy about Chrismukkah... on December 7th the New York Board of Rabbis joined the Catholic League to issue a press release denouncing Chrismukkah. Now Josh Schwartz, creator of The O.C. has been pitted against me in the "Battle of the Matzoh Ball Snowmen." The Chrismukkah media backlash has officially begun.
In the December 8th edition of the New York Daily News, columnist Lloyd Grove, in his "Lowdown Daily Dish" reports that Josh Schwartz and I are "locked in a fierce competition to market and profit from Chrismukkah holiday cards, T-Shirts, coffee mugs and otehr paraphernalia."
"I have a bone to pick with Ron," Josh Schwartz, "The OC's creator, told me yesterday, tongue in cheek. "He's kind of using us to make money." I don't know if we invented the word Chrismukkah, but this guy is sure running with it". "We have Chrismukkah cards and wrapping paper, too, and our stuff is the real deal."
Now we've assumed Josh Schwartz is way too busy to know or care about our little barn based micro business... so we were puzzled by Josh's comments... especially given the fact our cards preceeded the OC's "real deal" cards by months. Just look at our "Matzoh Ball Snow Man", "Candy Cane Menorah" and "Chrismukkah Man" beanie hat - all created last winter, then look at the OC versions now being sold on the www.OCinsider.com site. Notice any similarities? So why is Josh tossing hot matzoh balls at us?
"In the spirit of Chrismukkah," Schwartz said, "I will try to make Ron feel guilt - and at the same time, I will turn the other cheek."
Now I always feel guilty about something... so that won't be hard. But Josh knows that variations on the word Chrismukkah have been in use years before The OC put it in a script. Plus, I can count of one hand the number of people who've bought our Chrismukkah cards and mentioned "The OC" as the reason. Most of the journalists and customers I've spoken or emailed with had never seen an episode of "The O.C." The teen base that "The OC" attracts is not your typical customer for interfaith Jewish holiday cards. Seems to me the media atttention Chrismukkah.com received these past few weeks has done far more to boost awareness of the "The OC" show then "The OC" has benefited us.
Josh did say it was "cool that he acknowledged that our show inspired him". And that's true. The OC did inspire us and I've let people know that when asked.
Josh and his creative team at The OC have produced a very watchable series which Michelle and I TiVo every week. (Course, we relate to Sandy and Kirsten much more than Seth and Ryan.) We had hoped Josh would be proud that his show played a part in inspiring a real life interfaith family to help create a real life Chrismukkah holiday. We even sent Josh and the other exeuctives behind the show a gift of our cards back in early October... a week later WB lawyers filed the first trademark on the word Chrismukkah. Now, 2 months later O.C. greeting cards go on sale. Stay tuned till next week.

Ron: Wow, jeez, yikes, help! You are so right, the media backlash has begun, first the media builds you up, fun style, and then the gossip columns and nasty editors in NYC start thinking CONTROVERSY, let's see how we can bring them down! Sad day in mediaville. But par for the course.
And for Warner OC people to get into this bigtime, just shows how sick the system is. You are so right, they should be flattered you got so much PR for the show, ratings and awareness went up probably 25% because of your PR, and now they come back with a lawsuit. So hollywood. So sad.
And they got the money and they got the guns, so they might even force you to change your course a bit. name change or something. or spelling change. lawyers always win. they set the table with language. money talks.
but you have a great idea with the card business and maybe Josh will let it be. [note to Josh: "Let it be!"]
Note to Llyod Grove: Chill, man, chill. Note to WB: let ie be bigtime and show your largesse.]
i hope David wins in this media/legal fight with the Goliaths of show biz. the people support you, and if u have to change directions a bit, name change or whatever, keep on trucking. you done a good thing and the angels of interfaith interlife intercommunity love you. 4ever.
no going back. the world has changed. is changing.
more power to you, Ron, and best of luck in the good fight. forget guilt. go for shame; shame on you WB for being so petty. Josh: grow up!
Best wishes from

Gosh, I never realized people could take things to such a level over something that is so insignificant in the long-run. When I first heard of Chrismukkah I thought it quite clever. Heck, I even got an extended version of the word on an email from a mailing list I am on: Christmukwanzaamas.
Hell, I look forward to purchasing this paraphernalia you speak of.
Due to the constant integration and blending of various cultures in youth throughout the world, I find this matter completely blown out of proportion.
Kudos to you.
Cheers.

I've been out of the loop. I have no idea what O.C. is. I just happened on your site and as a half-Jew - something that the religiously correct crowd says doesn't exist - love the whole thing. It's always been Chrismukkah to me. I just didn't know the word.
I haven't even browsed the merchandise yet, but I'm going to do that right now.
Nice Blog
The whole idea of the holiday of Chanukah is about the Jews fighting assimilation. Yes that is what the holiday about. It is not about eating potato pancakes or doughnuts. That only shows a major miracle that transpired on Chanukah. The very reason for the so-called necessity for such a holiday called Chrismukkah goes against every principle of Judaism and the Holiday of Chanukah. In Judaism a marriage of a non Jew is not even recognized as a marriage at all. All it is recognized as is a sin. Thus your wonderful Holiday that you made a nice and charming websites about is celebrating a sin. What is next? The Jewish pro-pork eating website? Or the Jewish Lets all eat on Yom Kippur website? The truth is, if the mother is Jewish, the child is Jewish. The father can be a gorilla, it makes no difference. The Truth is a Christian child does not have the right to celebrate Chanukah. Yes he does not have the right. It is a spit in the face to every Jew that actually cares about Judaism. I pity you all, who celebrate it, and for the Jews that do celebrate it, I wish you all a refouah shelaymah. I know, none of you know what it means, go ask your grandmother, if she is still alive. I am sure you all made her very proud by the way. (Note, it was not an insult)
Wow, the comment prior to mine was harsh. I enjoyed reading your blog, had a few laughs! I think it is very cool that you and your family has found ways to celebrate each member's heritage and spiritual beliefs instead of letting it come between you!! Way to go!
